San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Chargers have kept one of their top potential free agents in the fold, with the team announcing Friday it has reached an agreement with linebacker Donald Butler on a multi-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The defensive co-captain was considered one of the Chargers offseason priorities to re-sign. "Feeling blessed! Yall heard it here first! Deal is done!! SD I aint going no where!!," Butler wrote on his Twitter account. Butler has started 40 regular-season games for San Diego over the past three years and compiled 257 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks, three interceptions and three passes defensed. The 25-year-old recorded 84 tackles and one interception in 13 games prior to last years AFC Playoffs, adding 18 stops and a pick in the Chargers two postseason contests. A third-round pick of San Diego in the 2010 draft, Butler spent his entire rookie campaign on injured reserve with a torn Achilles and missed three games last season with a groin injury. Toronto (3-3-0) has had as many as 10 players getting treatment this week. The good news is that star striker Jermain Defoe ran past reporters Thursday, after working out separately from the main squad under bright sunshine at the teams north Toronto training ground. Defender Doneil Henry has also resumed light training after a calf and knee injury. Defoe (hamstring) and Henry have both missed the last three games. Midfielder Michael Bradley, who played in Saturdays 2-1 road loss against FC Dallas, did not practise Thursday. He had a previously scheduled minor procedure on a nerve issue in his foot which has been bothering him for some time. "It just means hes just got to get off it (the foot) for a week," said manager Ryan Nelsen. "This was always planned, to do it at this time when we have a couple of weeks off." Bradley, who did not look himself against Dallas, had missed the previous game against Colorado due to quadricep and groin issues. Midfielder Jeremy Hall is a longer-term injury concern, however, with an Achilles injury. Most of Torontos walking wounded should be back in practice next week with Bradley annd Defoe both expected to be available for selection for TFCs next outing, May 3 against the visiting New England Revolution.dddddddddddd New England (2-3-2) hosts defending champion Sporting Kansas City this weekend. Toronto may still not have a full deck next week but it will be far better than the 11 fit players it had at one practice session this week. Goalkeeper Julio Cesar and defenders Mark Bloom and Justin Morrow are the only TFC players to have seen action in all six games this season. Nelsen has been forced to use 20 different players. Henry, for one, is taking his return slowly. What was advertised as a jarred knee was actually a low-grade medial collateral ligament sprain and calf tear. He has spent a week running and is now testing the leg out by jumping and changing directions. "So far, so good," he said. "I feel good. So hopefully I can start training with the team next week." He had been feeling his knees and ankles for some time but said he was sidelined after his knee buckled while about to pass the ball. After playing four of its first six games on the road, Toronto now plays five of its next seven at home including an Amway Canadian Championship date with Vancouver. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Budding star Chase Elliott has landed a full-time NASCAR ride for 2014 with JR Motorsports, with surprise sponsorship from NAPA Auto Parts. Elliott, the son of 1988 NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, will race for the Nationwide Series title at JRM driving the No. 9 Chevrolet in a nod to his fathers longtime number. The ride became possible when NAPA reversed its decision to leave NASCAR following the scandal surrounding Michael Waltrip Racings attempt to manipulate a September race to get Martin Truex Jr. into the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. NAPA issued a harsh rebuke of MWR and ended its multimillion-dollar sponsorship of Truex one year into a three-year contract extension with MWR. That cost Truex his ride at MWR and forced the organization to lay off about a third of its workforce. But the Atlanta-based company had a change of heart, deciding to return for a 19th season in NASCAR to back the up-and-coming Elliott. The Elliotts are from Dawsonville, Georgia, roughly an hour from NAPA headquarters, and Chase didnt become eligible to compete full-time in NASCAR until he turned 18 at the end of November. "NAPA is pleased to continue its long standing involvement in NASCAR, the most popular form of motorsports in the United States supported by its many loyal and passionate fans," said Dan Askey, president of NAPA. "Chase Elliott is a young and talented, future star in the sport and will represent NAPA well both on and off the track." NAPA representatives declined interviews. Elliott will make his Nationwide debut at the Feb. 22 season opening race at Daytona. He will report for testing this weekend and be paired with crew chief Greg Ives, who led Regan Smith to a pair of wins and a third-place finish in the standings at JRM last season. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me, a chance to make a career of this," Elliott said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I couldnt ask for anything more than a chance with JR Motorsports, the backing of Rick Hendrick, and the support of NAPA. I think to have that connection with NAPA is really, really neat. The headquarters is not far from our house, and to me, that goes a lot further than you think. For both of us to come from Georgia, my home state, is special." Elliott has been in the Hendrick Motorsports development program since 2011, when he was a freshman in high school. His first NASCAR K&N Series win was at Iowa in 2012, and he became the youngest superspeedway winner in ARCA history at Pocono last June. He then won in the Truck Series in only his sixth start when he won at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in September. "I think the Nationwide Series is only a short step for him," said JR Motorsports owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. "Hes that good." JRM will field two full-time teams this season with Elliott and Smith in the No. 7 Chevrolet. The organization will also run the No. 5 with Kevin Harvick on a limited basis and the No. 88 with Earnhardt Jr. Ryan Pemberton will replace Ives as Smiths crew chief. "This will be the strongest line-up weve put on the track since we started racing full time in 2006," said Kelley Earnhardt Miller, general manager of JR Motorsports. Elliott will try to become only the fifth multi-generational NASCAR champion. His father won 44 Cup races, including two Daytona 500s; "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville" was also a 16-time winner of NASCARs Most Popular Driver Award. "No doubt the historical element of this is pretty cool," said Earnhardt Jr. "Bill Elliott is one of the greats. Ive always looked up to him. He had some great battles with my dad. I think there are a lot of Elliott fans and Earnhardt fans that will take interest in Chases career and support him 100 per cent." Elliott will spend the first half of the Nationwide season juggling his first full-time job and the second semester of his senior year of high school in Georgia. The school has been flexible in working with Elliott as hes pursued his racing career, but the Nationwide schedule will be his most intensive racing to date and mother, Cindy, spent part of Monday discussing a plan with administrators. "I hope they are understanding because this is a full-time job and one that will require me to be gone a lot -- but second semester of senior year of high school? Theres usually not a lot going on," he said. "I hope that side of it is manageable because I really think Ive been given a lot in this situation. I feel things are positioned here at the shop, with NAPA, everything is aligned for success." Baker Mayfield Jersey . COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins finally flexed their offensive muscles. And they needed every bit of scoring they could muster. Malkin had a hat trick and the Penguins almost blew a four-goal lead before holding off the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 on Monday night to clinch their first-round playoff series in six games. "Its more important that we win the game and (end) the series," Malkin said of the 10th time hes scored three times in a game in his career. "Going into the second round now, you feel so much better when you have confidence. I hope in the next round I can score more." Pittsburgh awaits the winner of the New York-Philadelphia series, with the Rangers leading 3-2 going into Tuesday nights Game 6. Its a good thing for the Penguins that Malkin -- scoreless in his past nine playoff games including the first five in the series -- finally found the net. The Blue Jackets, closer to making tee times than thinking about a Game 7, scored three times in a 4:52 span in the third period to turn up the pressure on the Penguins, an overwhelming favourite before the series got under way. "Were a proud group in here," forward Brandon Dubinsky said. "We didnt want to get embarrassed on home ice. If it was going to be our last game of the season, we didnt want to have any quit. We didnt have any quit in this locker room all season. We just kept pushing and pushing." Brandon Sutter also scored before leaving with an injury and Matt Niskanen had two assists as the Penguins became the first team in the series to score first and win -- but barely. Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves and made a couple of big stops after the game turned into a squeaker. "It was a good test," he said of the wild last few minutes. Coach Dan Bylsma said the toe-to-toe matchup heralded a new level of contentious play between the teams. "Weve got a rivalry going here with the Jackets," he said. "They gave us everything we could handle and it was a nice series for them. That was an extremely tough first-round opponent." Fedor Tyutin, Artem Anisimov and Nick Foligno scored for Columbus, Folignos redirect of a Tyutin shot cut the gap to a goal with 4:47 left. A crowd of 19,189 stood and roared the rest of the way as the Blue Jackets piled up scoring chances. The Penguins were hard pressed to fight off the aggressive Blue Jackets after goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who also had 24 saves, was pulled for an extra attacker with under 2 minutes left. Matt Calvert was wide with a potential tying shot with 3:30 left. Dubinskys shot with 35 seconds left was deflected by Fleury. Columbus had overcome a 3-0 deficit at home in Game 4, scoring on a Fleury gaffe in the final seconds of regulation before Foligno won it in the overtime. "After we got the third goal, anything could happen," coach Todd Richards said. "We had done it the last time we played in the building. My thought was it was going to happen." Up until the last few minutes, it was Malkins game. He hadnt scored in the first 332:52 of the series, then scored three times in a span of 26:11. "I could see it coming in the morning skate," teammate James Neal said. "His shot was going into the back of the net." The Blue Jackets, one of the NHLs youngest teams, looked hopeless until Tyutins shot from the right dot ended Fleurys shutout streak at 97:26 -- since the Blue Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the first period of Game 5. But then Anisimov scored from the left point with 6:06 remaining to make it 4-2 and Foligno redirected a Tyutin shot to cut the lead to 4-3. "That was a big win," said Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby, who went goal-less in the series. "Obviously we didnt want to make it as close as we did. But we found a way to win." Notes: The Penguins improved to 8-4 in Game 6s when up 3-2 in the playoffs. ... Columbus was without veteran forward (and Pittsburgh native) R.J. Umberger (shoulder). ... Instead, he focused on acquiring depth, of both players and picks, casting a wide net over the two days in Philadelphia. "We had a smattering of everything," said Cheveldayoff. "We got some high skill in the first round, we got a big two-way defenceman early today, and we picked up some more skill, some grit on the wing and then we got some big centremen at the end as well." The Jets made two trades as well, sending the 159th pick and the rights to goalie Eddie Pasquale to the Washington Capitals for the 164th and 192nd picks in this years draft and a seventh-round pick in 2015. The Jets also acquired Ottawas sixth-round pick in 2015 for their 189th pick this year. "We came in with seven picks, and we ended up picking seven players," said Cheveldayoff. "We stockpiled some picks for next years draft, and we did come in saying that if we felt we were going to get our players later in the draft that we could get to see if we could move down. "We ended up acquiring an extra pick when we moved the rights to Eddie Pasquale, so we had some picks that if we could find a way to move into next year to have those assets moving forward, that was something we were looking forward to." The Jets took Jack Glover from the United States under-18 team with the 69th overall pick, their highest pick on the second day of the draft. "Hes got good size, he moves very well, and hes a good two-way defenceman," said Cheveldayoff. "Getting him in the third round is something we were very excited about, becausee where we had him on our list was not in that realm.dddddddddddd When he was available we actually looked at trying to package something to move up into the later parts of the second round, but we couldnt find a match, so we were happy to get a player that we liked." "I like to push the pace," said the six-foot-three, 190-pound Glover, "and to get the puck to the forwards. I definitely think that Im a guy that relies on my skating and my vision, and I think those are my two biggest assets. Im not a big hitter, Im not a big bruiser, but I take great pride in my defensive game." With their fourth-round picks, the Jets took two players from the WHL: centre Chase De Leo from Portland and defenceman Nelson Nogier from Saskatoon. The team used its lone fifth-round pick on left wing Clinston Franklin of the USHL, and wrapped its activity in the sixth and seventh rounds with centre Pavel Kraskovsky from the Russia-Jr. team and centre/left wing Matt Ustaski from the BCHL. De Leo will join his childhood best friend and WHL rival, goalie Eric Comrie, as a Jets prospect. Comrie is the half-brother of NHL players Mike and Paul Comrie. "When we were 10 years old we had a piece of paper and we both signed it, saying that we were going to be teammates in the NHL one day," said De Leo. "Its pretty special and very exciting." Cheveldayoff likes the familiarity between the two prospects. "Its great to see the players in our organization have a bond already even before they get to development camp or training camp," said Cheveldayoff. "We are trying to build one family here, and its great to have a head start on it." TAMPA, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has broken his silence on the bullying scandal that has engulfed his team, saying hes appalled by Jonathan Martins allegations of daily harassment by teammates. Ross said he plans to meet with Martin on Wednesday at an undisclosed location and that he has been in touch with the tackle through text messages. "I look forward to that meeting. I think that can help us move forward," Ross said. "Id like to hear from him what had happened, why he felt that way and what we did and what we could have done to prevent something like this from happening. I want to hear the circumstances, the facts." The owner vowed before Monday nights game between the Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get to bottom of the allegations and create a locker room culture that "suits the 21st century." "It couldnt have been a worse nightmare," said Ross, who was joined at the press conference by team president and chief executive officer Tom Garfinkel. The NFL is investigating Martins allegations against teammates, including Richie Incognito. Martin, 24, is with his family in California to undergo counselling for emotional issues. Incognito, 30, has been suspended indefinitely. A special investigator for the league will determine whether Incognito harassed Martin, and whether the Dolphins mishandled the matter. "We simply dont know what happened or didnt happen yet," Garfinkel said. "We want to know the truth." Ross strongly endorsed second-year Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, saying he had the "utmost confidence" in the man he hired in 2012. The owner, however, did not express support for beleaguered general manager Jeff Ireland. "Joe Philbin is probably one of the most organized people Ive ever met," Ross said. "When I interviewed him that stood out, but what also stood out was his character. I dont think there is a better person, a more respected person, a more caring person in the National Football League than Joe Philbin." Ross said to he has formed an independent advisory group that includes Tony Dungy, Don Shula, Dan Marino, Jason Taylor and Curtis Martin to review organizational conduct policies and to make recommendations on areas for improvement. "We need to look at ourselves. We have to examine everything internally," Ross said. "This is so appalling to me. I know Im capable of overreacting. I want to get everybodys feedback because we all know the football locker room is a different workplace than most of us are accustomed to. I dont want to make any excuses." Neither Ross nor Garfinkel addressed an ESPN report that Martin is likely done for the season and feels he cannot return to the Dolphins. Martins agent Kenneth Zuckerman did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press. Ross said he will take an "open mind" going into his meeting with Martin. "I want to hear the facts," the owner said, adding that hed also like to meet with Incognito. "He deserves to be heard," Ross said of the suspended guard. The 6-foot-5, 312-pound Martin left the team two weeks ago. His attorney has alleged that Martin was harassed daily, and Incognito acknowledged leaving a voicemail for Martin in April in which he used a racist term, threatened to kill his teammate and threatened to slap Martins mother. Rosss reaction as the scandal mushroomed? "I was appalled," the owner said. "I think anybody would be appalled. When you first read that text that was reported, to me I didnt realize people would talk or text or speak that way to people." Incognito is white and Martin is biracial. Teammates both black and white have said Incognito is not a racist, and theyve been more supportive of the veteran guard than they have of Martin. The 6-3, 319-pound Incognito has long been labeled one of the NFLs dirtiest players with a reputation for out-of-bounds behaviour off the field. But this season he was a member of the player leadership council, raising questions about the role of Philbin, his staff and Miami management in the case. The scandal is the latest public-relations headache for Ross since he became majority owner of the Dolphins in 2009. Theyve endured four consecutive losing seasons, their longest such streak since the 1960s, and often play in a half-empty stadium, their local popularity eclipsed by the Miami Heat. Ross apologized to Dolphins fans "for being in this position. I know we will come out of this as a better organization." Cheap Puma Shoes Wholesale . He missed a three-game series against New York this week after suffering the injury last Sunday while trying to leg out a base hit during a game in Cincinnati. Manager John Gibbons said the plan is for Bautista to have a "light day" Thursday before really testing out the leg Friday with the teams training staff. "Hopefully by the end of the weekend, were hoping he can get out there," Gibbons said. Anthony Gose was slotted to fill in for Bautista in right field on Thursday night against the Chicago White Sox. Bautista could be used as a pinch-hitter at some point in the four-game series but its doubtful that would occur before Saturday. Bautista is batting .305 this season with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 77 games. Also Thursday, Gibbons said infielder Steve p;Tolleson "was good to go" after seeing an eye specialist earlier in the day.dddddddddddd Tolleson had been dealing with blurry vision over the last few days, likely due to an allergic reaction to his contact lenses. He was wearing glasses before taking batting practice at Rogers Centre. "They make him look way too smart to be out there," Gibbons joked. The Blue Jays have had a few players go down with injuries of late. Infielder Brett Lawrie was also hurt last Sunday against the Reds, breaking a finger when he was hit by a pitch. Lawrie, from Langley, B.C., will likely be out until at least the all-star break in mid-July. Left-handed reliever Brett Cecil also went on the disabled list last week due to a groin injury. DAYTON, Ohio -- Given a second chance, T.J. Warren put on a show in the NCAA tournament. The hard-to-guard sophomore forward scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half on Tuesday night, showing why he was the ACCs player of the year, and North Carolina State led most of the way in a 74-59 victory over Xavier in the NCAA tournaments First Four. N.C. State (22-12) didnt have much time to celebrate. The 12th-seeded Wolfpack headed to Orlando, Fla., for a game on Thursday against St. Louis in the Midwest Regional. Warren had the most to do with it. He made up for a freshman tournament flop on the same floor a year earlier and prevented Xavier (21-14) from getting any traction in the second half. "Hes just a great player," coach Mark Gottfried said. "Its hard to keep him down for a whole 40 minutes." Centre Matt Stainbrook led Xavier with 19 points and nine rebounds despite an injured left knee. Leading scorer Semaj Christon was limited to 14 points, and Xavier made only 2 of 14 shots from beyond the arc. Xavier was playing in a familiar arena less than an hour from campus. Familiar, but not entirely friendly. Fans of the Dayton Flyers -- a long-time rival -- booed loudly as they took the court, making for a mixed welcome with a lot of Musketeer fans in the stands as well. Warren made it all a moot point, helping N.C. State take all the drama out of the game over the final 11 minutes. Ralston Turner added 17 points. The Wolfpack went six years between NCAA appearances before Gottfried got them there three years in a row. This was his youngest and least-experienced team: Only two players with tournament experience. They got one of the final at-large bids with a strong closing run, winning five of their last six games, including an upset of Syracuse in the ACC tournament. Warren was the key. And he really wanted a second chance at the NCAA tournament. As a freshman last year, he managed only four points as N.C. State lost to Temple 76-72 at the University of Dayton Arena in its opening game. Hes grown a lot in one year, leading the ACC with 24.8 points per game this season and hitting the 40-point mark twice. He got off to a bad start on Tuesday, missing his first two shots and picking up two fouls in the first 4 minutes, 14 seconds. Warren checked back into the game and hit a jumper for his first points at the 11:29 mark. Christon, who was Warrens roommate at Brewster Academy for one year, kept the Musketeers in it during the first half. He scored off two drives to the basket, starting an 8-1 run. Stainbrooks reverse layup trimmed it to 27-26 with 2:22 left. Jordan Vandenbergs three-point play gave N.C. State a 34-28 advantage at halftime. Dee Davis hit Xaviers first 3-pointer, and Christon scored on a fast-break lay-in that cut it to 39-37. Thats when Warren took over. He had a pair of pull-up jumpers, followed by a steal and a lay-up as N.C. State rebuilt the lead to 51-42. He had another pull-up jumper and a fast-break dunk that made it 57-47 with 7:56 to go. Xavier never got closer than seven points the rest of the way, fading down the stretch. The biggest question for Xavier was how Stainbrooks left knee would hold up. The Big Easts second-leading rebounder sprained a ligament, sat out the final regular season game and was extremely limited in two Big East conference games. He was back in form, but Xavier didnt have enough other scoring options to keep up. Buy Cheap Air Max 90 . Each day, TSN.ca provides the latest rumours, reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. Defensive Depth TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun is reporting the Toronto Maple Leafs have considerable interest in unrestricted free-agent defenceman Dan Boyle.INDIANAPOLIS - There are a few common denominators between the Indiana Pacers and the reigning champion Miami Heat, with the number of similarities growing each day. Both teams were conference finalists a year ago, both clubs have an unmistakable identity that defines them, both play unselfish, defence-first basketball and in the last four days, both have reminded the Raptors how far they are from competing at their level. For Toronto, Fridays meeting with the still undefeated Pacers came to an unofficial end before most of the home teams fans could make it back to their seats. As good as the Raptors looked in the first half and as hard as they worked to look that good, Indiana reclaimed what was, as they knew it, rightfully theirs in less than three revealing minutes. "We knew they were going to come out and throw their best haymaker at us," Dwane Casey said, his team leading by as many as 12 in the first half and holding on to a two-point advantage at the break. Everyone knew they would, because thats what great teams do. Indiana opened the second half scoring 10 straight points, forcing three turnovers and holding Toronto to 0-of-4 shooting. Just like that, Torontos 24 minutes of (mostly) hard work was more than erased and the game was over. You could see it on the faces of players sitting on both benches as Casey was forced to call a quick third-quarter timeout to regroup. The Pacers had been in this position before, more than you would guess though six games this season. There was no panic, there was no time for sulking. They knew they had it. The Raptors body language spoke louder than words. They knew it was only a matter of time now. "[There are] no moral victories in this one," Kyle Lowry stated and Rudy Gay echoed minutes later. "We lost." The Pacers matched a franchise record - previously set in 1970-71 as an ABA team - winning six straight to begin a season. They havent allowed a team to score more than 91 points or shoot over 40 per cent. They havent scored 100 points, but they havent needed to. "I dont know if the history of [it] is as [important] as the fact that we have to lead on our goal," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said before the game. "And our goal is the number one seed. Were off to a good start and we all understand the importance of each game when our goal is so high." Theyve trailed at halftime in five of their six games, but it hasnt mattered. When youre a team as good as the Pacers, you can afford to bide your time. The Raptors learned that from the Heat on Monday when the defending champs started Torontos losing streak. The Pacers sent them home with that same effortless spanking, extending the Raptors skid to three and reminding them why Wednesdays disappointing loss to the Bobcats was so disappointing. They need to take advantage of winnable games because in this league, if youre a middling team, theyre few and far between. "There are no moral victories," Gay repeated. "We want to get this next one, thats it. We have to get this next one. The more we put ourselves in a hole, the more important the next game is and the next game is pretty important for us." The Raptors host the winless Utah Jazz in the second night of a back-to-back on Saturday. Its not a game they can afford to lose. George vs. Gay The match-up at small forward was a fun one in Indiana Friday night. Gay and the Pacers rising superstar Paul George combined for 53 points, 30 per cent of the total offence in the gamee.dddddddddddd Gay - who came into the game struggling, shooting just 34 per cent - was red-hot out of the gate. The Raptors leading scorer looked like the player of old, scoring 14 of his teams 32 first-quarter points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. He would go on to shoot just 3-of-13 in the second half, finishing the evening with an even 30 points but needing 26 shots to get there. "You can talk about Paul George, but I thought Rudy outplayed him," Casey said. "They won the game, but talking about individual matchups, Rudy played the game hes supposed to play." George was outscored by his counterpart, pouring in 23 on the night, but hardly outplayed with 17 of his points coming in the third quarter when his team needed him the most and the game was ultimately decided. The Pacers all-star forward, who came into the game fifth in scoring, has had at least 21 points in each of his teams six contests. A gifted two-way player, hes every bit the superstar he was paid to be this summer. As George stepped to the line with 11 seconds remaining, he was greeted by a chorus of MVP chants. Although anointing an MVP six games into the season is as silly as it sounds, hes playing at that level and thats the direction the 23-year-old is headed. Hes that good. Learning from the best The Raptors coaching staff, like most teams with young and impressionable big men, have been using the Pacers Roy Hibbert as a model for the 21-year-old Valanciunas. Offensively, the Raptors sophomore centre continues to make strides but, as head coach Casey reminds us, he still has a ways to go on the defensive end. The team hopes he will one day become the anchor that Indianas all-star big man has grown into on both ends of the floor. "He does such a good job of getting deep post position," Casey said of Hibbert, who scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting. "Where he got JV last year was reposting, kicking it out and reposting up so on that second one, if you relax at all, all you can do is pray." One technique Torontos staff continues to preach with Valanciunas is something Hibbert has perfected in his sixth NBA season. To stay out of foul trouble and contest shots in the lane, the Raptors want Valanciunas to go straight up, remaining vertical without bringing his arms down in the process. "We give him the respect of calling it the Hibbert play," Casey said of the technique. "Hes one of the best in the league at doing that and thats where JV is getting much better." "Im trying to be like him with that skill," Valanciunas noted. But its not something Hibbert - the leagues early-season shot block leader - picked up overnight, one of the reasons Casey preaches patience with the development of his young centre. "It takes a lot of time," Pacers coach Frank Vogel acknowledged. "Its one of the things I think most of the big men in the NBA are working to achieve now. I think thats the way that Roy has set the model for how its done." Friday was one of those nights that Casey calls a "learning experience" for Valanciunas. One of his roughest of the young season, Valanciunas scored just four points in 24 minutes, committing five fouls and two turnovers. He was out-muscled by Hibbert, beat off the dribble by quicker players, exposed on switches and missed defensive assignments. The Pacers star big man is a good example of what Valanciunas can grow into but he also serves as a reminder that it takes time. CHICAGO -- Toronto Marlies goalie Drew MacIntyre knew a 3-0 lead wouldnt hold against the increasingly desperate Chicago Wolves on Saturday. But MacIntyre and defenders in front of him withstood a late Wolves push to claim a 4-2 victory and 2-0 advantage in the Western Conference semifinal series. "They were buzzing, they were more desperate after (our) 3-0 lead and really dominated us at times," said MacIntyre, who was provided with a three-goal first period cushion. "I think we sat back and let them come a We have to be better when were having that lead and still play like its a 0-0 game." Still, the club heads home with a chance to clinch the American Hockey League series on home ice with three scheduled games at Ricoh Coliseum. "You come into these series and hope to find a way to get into overtime one night and steal a game and to come out with two is great," Marlies coach Steve Spott said. "I give Chicago a lot of credit. They threw everything they had at us and we had to weather the storm." It took just 64 seconds for Torontos first strike. Centre Peter Holland picked up a loose puck following a Wolves turnover behind their net and dumped a shot past Chicago goalie Jake Alllen for a 1-0 lead. Toronto made it 2-0 at 7:38 mark when Brandon Kozun lined up for a shot on goal but found centre Trevor Smith open to Allens right. Kozun instead send a feed and Smith had an easy tap-in. Three minutes later, right winger Kenny Ryan swept towards Allen, who moved to block an opening. Ryan then spun and slipped a feed to winger Josh Leivo, who sent a shot over Allens shoulder for a 3-0 lead at 14:46. The Wolves finally scored as right winger Shane Harper broke MacIntyres shutout at 1:46 of the third. Chicago narrowed the margin to 3-2 on left winger Dmitrij Jaskins power-play goal at 17:21, but Marlies left winger Jerry DAmigo secured the win with an empty netter with 57 seconds to play. "We became a harder hockey club, a more seasoned hockey club," Spott said. "Its really the first time we had to deal with big-time adversity, so its nice that we dealt with it." MacIntyre made 22 saves for the win while Allen turned away 18 shots in defeat. "Theyre goalie played good and he blocked a lot of our shots but you cant make four or five horrendous errors early in the game to get down like that," said Wolves coach John Anderson. "Other than that we came along, we regrouped and had a pretty decent game after that. But 3-0 against a team like that is pretty tough." The All England Club said Tuesday that the mens and womens singles champions will each receive 1.76 million pounds ($2.9 million), a 10 per cent increase on last years top prize won by Andy Murray and Marion Bartoli. By comparison, this years French Open champions will receive 1.65 million euros ($2.3 million) while Stanislas Wawrinka and Li Na earned $2.65 million for their wins at the Australian Open in January. U.S. Open organizers have yet to announce the prize money for this years tournament. The main increases at Wimbledon are for the early losers, with players who fail to get past the third round receiving prize money worth 12.5 per cent more than in 2013. "Weve placed emphasis on the large group of players who need our help the most, those players who lose in qualifying and in the early rounds of the championships," Wimbledon chairman Philip Brook said. "We also had an eye to being competitive internationally, and we do keep our watch on what is going on in other tennis events and in particular the other Grand Slams." The grass-court Grand Slam will be played from June 23-July 6. In keeping with player demands for a larger slice of Grand Slam revenues, all four majors have greatly increased their prize money in the past two years, with Wimbledon offering the biggest amount following a record 40 per cent increase last year. The French Open now offers more than 25 million euros ($34.5 million) while the U.S. Open increased its purse to $34.3 million and the Australian Open went up to AU$33 million ($31 million). The Wimbledon prize money for the majority of singles players who lose in the first three rounds of the grass-court tournament has been increased by more than 100 per cent over a three-year period. The main increase this year is for first-round losers, with each receiving 27,000 pounds ($45,450), 14.9 per cent more than last year. "This year weve got a very generous increase once again," Brook said. &quuot; We wanted to build on the focus from 2012 and 2013.dddddddddddd." There will also be an increase of 8.7 per cent in prize money for doubles and a 6.1 per cent increase for mixed doubles. In all, an extra 2.4 million pounds ($4 million) is up for grabs compared to last year. Brook said plans to build a retractable roof on Court No. 1 are still on track pending planning approval, with an application to be submitted later this year. The roof, similar to the one on Centre Court, should be completed in 2019, and court capacity will be increased by 900 seats to 12,400. Brook also confirmed the tournament will start a week later in 2015 to create a three-week gap between the French Open and Wimbledon, with the mens final on July 12. "Hopefully with the extra week more players will be encouraged to compete on grass," Brook said. Seedings for this years tournament will be announced on June 18. Brook said defending champion Murray, who has slipped to eighth in the rankings, will stay among the top seeds thanks to his strong record on grass over the past two years. Wimbledons seeding order is determined using the ATP rankings and points are added for achievements in grass-court tournaments in the past 12 months. "And we add to that 75 per cent of the best-performing tournament in the previous year," Brook said. "For Andy Murray, as the winner of Queens last year and the winner here last year, and a finalist here in 2012, there will be a significant impact on him." Brooks said the seedings will also have "significant impact" on seven-time champion Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, Brook said. Brook did not comment on speculation of a possible return to competition by Bartoli ahead of Wimbledon. The 29-year-old Frenchwoman retired suddenly after a loss at Cincinnati last August, explaining that her body could no longer take the strain after 14 years as a pro. When asked if her entourage had been in touch recently and if Bartoli would be granted a wild card if she asked for one, Brook said: "The rumours in France have not reached London yet, so well wait and see." Cespedes finished a single shy of the cycle and threw out two runners at the plate, powering the Athletics past the Los Angeles Angels 11-3 on Saturday night in front of 35,067 fans. "I got a lot of motivation when I see the field like that," Cespedes said through an interpreter in Spanish. "The stands are full, the same thing when we were in the playoffs. It was sold out and they made me feel like a stronger mind and gave me a lot of motivation." In front of just the fourth sellout crowd of the season in Oakland, Cespedes gave quite a show. The reigning Home Run Derby champion doubled in the fourth, hit a triple in the seventh that scored the go-ahead runs and added a three-run homer in the eighth. He matched a career high with five RBIs to help the two-time defending AL West champions stretch their lead to 3 1/2 games over the Angels in the division. "No doubt about it," As manager Bob Melvin said when asked if Cespedes feeds off the roaring home crowds. "He just becomes a different player." Collin Cowgills three-run homer off Tommy Milone in the fourth accounted for all of the Angels runs. The As tagged Tyler Skaggs (4-3) with four runs and five hits in six-plus innings. Fernando Rodriguez (1-0) tossed one scoreless inning for the win. Milone allowed nine hits in six innings, striking out three and walking one. He laboured most of the way -- including escaping a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the first -- but got a big boost from his strong-armed, green glove-wearing left fielder on nearly identical plays in the second inning. Cespedes charged in and heaved a one-hop strike to catcher Derek Norris to nab Chris Iannetta and Kole Calhoun after line-drive singles. The throws sent fans roaring to their feet each time, and Cespedes received high-fives and head-pats from teammates and coaches in the dugout. &"He had a career night.dddddddddddd Im lucky that it was today," Milone said. Crew chief Fieldin Culbreth upheld the first call after a 2-minute, 30-second review to see if Norris illegally blocked the plate under the new collision rule. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Iannetta didnt have a lane to slid and the rule needs to be more clearly defined. There was no review or challenge on the second play to get Calhoun. "Knew it was going to be bang-bang and hes got a great arm," Calhoun said. "I thought I had a good jump. I thought itd be closer than what it was, but that was a great play by him." Cespedes came back big time with the bat. He doubled with one out in the fourth for Oaklands first hit, and Norris drove in a run on a flyout for Oaklands first run. After Kyle Blanks solo homer and Josh Donaldsons RBI groundout tied the score in the seventh, Cespedes drive off reliever Joe Smith landed just over Calhouns glove in right to score the go-ahead runs. Cespedes later lined a three-run shot in Jarrett Grubes major league debut in the eighth. It was Cespedes 10th home run this season. He also had five RBIs at Cleveland on May 18. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Alex Cobb pitched, Ben Zobrist hit and the Tampa Bay Rays won again. Tuesday nights 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers was the Rays 11th in 12 games and it moved them within one game of .500 (53-54) for the first time since April 23. "This is the team we are," said Zobrist, who drove in the Rays first two runs with a home run and a double. "We knew that this is the team we could be in spring training. It just took a long time for it to show up. "From here on out, I dont think were ever going to return to the way we were playing before June 11." Since that date the Rays are 29-12, the best record in the majors over that span. Cobb struck out 12 in eight innings and won his third straight start, attaining a winning record (7-6) for the first time this season. "I wish it would have happened sooner, but when you go into a rut you learn a lot about yourself mechanically," he said. "But it does feel like Im starting to get in the groove again. Right now everybodys clicking and itll make for a nice run." With the Brewers up 1-0 in the sixth, Zobrist hit his ninth homer, the only run off Milwaukee starter Matt Garza. Zobrists double in the eighth off reliever Will Smith (1-3) put the Rays ahead for the first time. Pinch-hitter Logan Forsythe followed with another RBI double and the Rays broke it open with a four-run inning. Garza, who pitched for the Rays for three seasons, gave up five hits and two walks in seven innings, striking out two. "I knew runs were going to be at a minimum," he said. "We lost to a team thats really, really hot right now. You make a mistake and they make you pay for it." Cobb, who is 5-0 in his last six starts, gave up only three hits and two walks before Grant Balfour finished it for Tampa Bay. "Were playing for the World Series," declared Rays manager Joe Maddon. "Thats our objective from Day One, to get to the playoffs and World Series. That has not changed. Im telling you our record is not reflecting it yet, but if we keep playing like this it soon shall." The Brewers, who have lost four of five, have scored two runs and had 12 hits in their last three games while striking out 30 times. Scooter Gennett drove in Milwaukees run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth after a leadoff single by Aramis Ramirez. TRAINERS ROOM Brewers: The team expects to make a decision soon about the roster status of reliever Jim Henderson, who pitched in a rehab game late Tuesday. Rays: Outfielder Wil Myers (broken right wrist) plans to take batting practice Saturday. Catcher Ryan Hanigan (strained left oblique) is sore after two days of batting practice and is expected to remain out until next week. ON DECK Brewers: Right-hander Yovani Gallardo (5-5) makes his first start against Tampa Bay Wednesday. Rays: Left-hander David Price (11-7) looks to win his seventh consecutive start Wednesday. ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins defensive end Jason Hatcher says he will have surgery on his left knee and will be sidelined four to six weeks. Hatcher said Wednesday he will have an arthroscopic procedure to clean up some cartilage. The injury comes as the Redskins are wrapping up their off-season practices. If the timetable holds, he would be able to practice around the start of training camp on July 23. Hatcher wore a compression wrap around his left leg as he watched Wednesdays minicamp session. Hatcher signed a four-year, $27.5 million contract with the Redskins in March as a free agent from the Dallas Cowboys. Air Jordan 3 For Sale Ireland . She was a pioneer. The 26-year-old from Calgary capped the World Cup season off in style, finishing second in a second straight womens singles luge event Saturday. American Kate Hansen claimed the gold medal with a two-run time of one minute 23.976 seconds. Gough, the first-run leader, finished second, 0.076 seconds behind. Russian Natalia Khoreva was third, 0.176 seconds back. Gough claimed her 17th career World Cup medal. "That was a very good race today with two solid runs," said Canadian team coach Wolfgang Staudinger. "We are only at this track once every two years so to be able to perform on a track where we have minimal runs is impressive." Calgarys Kimberley McRae finished sixth in 1:24.37 while Arianne Jones, also of Calgary, was 16th in 1:24.790. In mens doubles, Tristan Walker of Cochrane, Alta., and Calgarys Justin Snith were eighth in 1:23.304. Hansen was a surprise winner Saturday, becoming the first American to prevail in a singles race on the circuit since Nov. 22, 1997. It gave both her and the team a major infusion of confidence heading into next months Sochi Games. "Of course its a great surprise for me," Hansen said. "Ive never dreamed of winning the event." Hansen was a five-year-old when Cameron Myler gave the U.S. its most recent singles victory on the World Cup circuit, which also came in Sigulda. And she wasnt even born when Germany last failed to have a woman reach the medal podium after a race on tour. Improbable as it soundds, both things happened Saturday.dddddddddddd The 21-year-old Hansen capped her win with a track-record run in the second heat, while Germany -- which in fairness kept its top three sliders, including World Cup champion Natalie Geisenberger, out of the competition so they could prepare for the Olympics instead -- had no one finish better than seventh, an absolute rarity for the deepest team in the world. Hansens gold is the first for the U.S. in any major international race since Erin Hamlin won the world championship in 2009. "This is a momentous occasion," USA Luge spokesman Sandy Caligiore said. Germanys top slider was Dajana Eitberger, about a half-second behind Hansen. Germany had earned a medal in every World Cup womens singles race since 1988. Whether the German best were there or not, it was still a breakthrough for Hansen. The U.S. national champion held the lead at the midway point of the season-opening race at Lillehammer, Norway, then slipped all the way back to 12th in the second heat. And before Saturday, she had never even earned a medal in a World Cup race. Now shes heading to her first Olympics knowing how winning feels. "I dont know if the pressure with regard to the upcoming Olympic Games will be greater now," Hansen said. "Its a good question. But well see." Geisenberger, who clinched the World Cup title a week earlier, finished the season with 785 standings points. Gough was second with 626, Germanys Tatjana Huefner was third with 551, followed by Germanys Anke Wischnewski (493) and Eitberger (432). Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday with Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and Victor Moses on target. Costa volleyed home his seventh league goal of the season after slack Leicester marking at a corner, and Hazard made Chelseas first-half dominance count at Stamford Bridge with their second on 33 minutes. The visitors, who were second best in the first half, improved after the break and nearly got back into the match when David Luiz turned a Marc Albrighton cross onto his own post. Eden Hazard scored Chelseas second at Stamford Bridge But Moses made the game safe for Chelsea in the 80th minute, latching onto Nathaniel Chalobahs back-heel and tucking past Kasper Schmeichel.Antonio Conte had rubbished speculation over his future at Stamford Bridge after a three-match winless league run in September, and it was a fine performance from his side that will go some way to quietening those rumours further. Claudio Ranieri felt that defensive mistakes cost Leicester in their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea Their opponents, who conceded three times from corners against Man Utd, suffered again at a set-piece when Costa fired Chelsea in front after seven minutes. The striker, who escaped the attention of Wes Morgan, struck first-time past Schmeichel from Nemanja Matics near-post flick. Hazard rounds Kasper Schmeichel to score Chelseas second against Leicester Both teams had penalty appeals waved away early in the second half, and Leicester were nearly rewarded for their bright opening when Luiz struck the post at the wrong end, the ball bouncing fortuitously clear to preserve Thibaut Courtois clean sheet.Ranieri attempted to press the issue and introduced Mahrez and Slimani, but any momentum his team had gathered soon ebbed away. Marc Albrighton of Leicester (left) puts pressure on Chelseas Victor Moses NGolo Kante almost capped a man-of-the-match performance against his old club with his first Chelsea goal, but former team-mate Morgan blocked his goal-bound effort. And shortly before Chelseas third, Costa bizarrely appeared to call for his own substitution, only to be waved away by Conte. The Spaniard, who would have missed next Sundays meeting with Man Utd - live on Sky Sports - had he picked up his fifth booking of the season, was extremely animated and Conte confirmed after the match he ignored Costas request. The hosts did make it three with 10 minutes to play through Moses, moving them up to fifth in the table ahead of next Sundays clash with former boss Jose Mourinho. TSN.ca presents its latest weekly power rankings for the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League season. Rankings were weighted evenly between separate lists made by TSN Radio host and soccer analyst Gareth Wheeler as well as TSN.cas soccer editors. 1. Chelsea (Last Week-2) Chelsea became the first Premier League team to win at Etihad Stadium when they knocked off Manchester City 1-0.  Branislav Ivanovic provided the winner maker as Chelsea completed the double over their title contending rivals. 2. Manchester City (LW-1) For the first time this season, Manchester City were beaten at home, 1-0 by Chelsea.  Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko started up front, but they were locked down and frustrated by a tight Chelsea backline all game.  3. Arsenal (LW-3) A pair of goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain helped Arsenal climb back to the summit of the Barclays Premier League after a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.  Wojciech Szczesny was only forced to make two saves on his way to the clean sheet. 4. Liverpool (LW-4) A horrible error by Kolo Toure doomed Liverpool to a 1-1 draw with West Brom.  Daniel Sturridge gave his side a first half lead but Toure gifted the home side a second half equalizer, that proved to be the last goal scored in the game. 5. Everton (LW-7) After falling behind at Goodison Park, Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas fired Everton to a 2-1 home victory over Aston Villa.  The victory keeps Everton in one of the Barclays Premier Leagues European places. 6. Tottenham (LW-6) Paulinhos 61st minute marker salvaged a point for Spurs as they drew 1-1 with Hull City.  This was the first time Tottenham did not earn a win on the road under new manager Tim Sherwood. 7. Manchester United (LW-5) Robin van Persie scored Uniteds only goal as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Stoke City.  The setback leaves the champions seven points out of the top-four and a place in next years Champions League. 8. Southampton (LW-9) Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez were all on target in the second half as Southampton cruised to a 3-0 victory over Fulham.  Artur Boruc was solid when called upon to earn the clean sheet. 9. Newcastle United (LW-8) It was a tough contest for Newcastle as they were well beaten 3-0 at the hands of Sunderland.  Newcastle has just one win in their last six league contests. 10. Sunderland (LW-16) Fabio Borini, Adam Johnson and Jack Colback were all on target, the first from the penalty spot, as Sunderland dropped Newcastle 3-0.  11. Aston Villa (LW-11) Leandro Bacunas first half marker was all Aston Villa could muster as they fell 2-1 to Everton.  12. West Bromwich Albion (LW-14) Victor Anichebe benefited from a Kolo Toure error to earn West Brom a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.  Toure played the ball across his defence right into the path of Anichebe, who easily put home the equalizing marker. 13. Stoke City (LW-17) Charlie Adam scored on either side of halftime to lead Stoke to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.  His second marker came just five minutes after the champions had leveled the score.  This was Stokes first Premier League victory over United. 14. Hull City (LW-15) After being held goalless and pointless through the month of January, Shane Long broke them out of their funk helping them earn a 1-1 draw against Tottenham. 15. Swansea City (LW-11) In what turned out to be Michael Laudrups final match at the helm of Swansea, they were defeated 2-0 by West Ham.  On Tuesday, Laudrup was fired by the Welsh team almost a year after leading them to the 2013 League Cup, their first major trophy. 16. Norwich City (LW-12) Robert Snodgrass gave Norwich the lead after just five minutes but they were not able to hang on as they fell 2-1 to Cardiff City. 17. West Ham United (LW-18) An eventful contest saw West Ham earn a 2-0 victory over Swansea at Upton Park.  A first half brace from Kevin Nolan provided the difference in the contest.  In the second half Andy Carroll, who set up both goals, was sent off for an altercation with Chico Flores in the 59th minute. 18. Cardiff City (LW-19) After conceding the opening goal five minutes into the match, Kenwyne Jones and Craig Bellamy turned the game within a minute to earn Cardiff a 2-1 victory over Norwich City.  The victory was Ole Gunnar Solskjaers first in charge of the Welsh side. 19. Crystal Palace (LW-13) Crystal Palace surrendered two goals in the second half as they fell 2-0 to Arsenal.  Palace had trouble finding their rhythm in this contest. 20. Fulham (LW-20) A disastrous second half doomed Fulham to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton.  Darren Bent was turned away twice with chances to get his side on the board.
